Moonlight: Tedious Movie with Good Soundtrack
Moonlight – Nerd Reactor
The Academy Awards for Best Picture has always been the limelight of the Oscars for years and this year was no exception albeit with a twist ending only M. Night Shyamalan would pull off. The award was mistakenly awarded to the wrong movie after a mix up and that is unfortunately what Moonlight will be remembered for.
While La La Land had that 1950s musical vibe set in modern Los Angeles, Moonlight is from the opposite spectrum of Hollywood. It is a story about an African American boy named Chiron who grew up in an impoverished part of Miami and at the same time is going through thoughts about his sexuality.
But do not let that “Oscars mix-up” tag stray you away from the movie. The cinematography is great and so are the actors, especially Mahershala Ali’s portrayal of Juan, a drug dealer who helps with Chiron when he has trouble with his abusive drug addict of a mother.
However, the storyline is too simple and draggy. Even as an arthouse film lover, I fail to see the significance of what many claimed this movie as the Best of 2016. At least it has a nice soundtrack and the middle arc of the film does make things interesting. Unfortunately, the film is just a drab Best Picture Winner that is too overhyped.
