FabLab: Transforming Imagination into Reality
NILAI: Located in the academic Block E, level 3 of INTI International University, Fabrication Lab (FabLab) is a new space where students from all programs can access it, free of charge.
“FabLab provides facilities for students, innovators or anyone who want to design, modify something and make their prototype into reality, it also welcomes the think-tank who loves brainstorming,” said the dean of Faculty of Engineering and Quantity Surveying (FEQS), INTI, Dr Lai Yin Ling.
She added the FabLab will be officially launched at the end of May for students, but is open now from Monday to Friday, between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM.
Apart from that, the FabLab Advocates Team will be working to provide assistance to the students who are not well-versed with the tools.
Dr Lai said the advocates are a group of student-volunteers who are good at CAD (Computer Aided Design) drawing.
“If students can’t understand anything related to technical problems, that’s when they need to talk to the advocates,” she said.
innovation space for students to brainstorm ideas and sketch. For example, users can even draw on the wall.
The facilities also include a Prototyping Bay for 3D scanning and printing, an Electronic Bay for circuit making, processor programming, a Metal Cutting Bay where various machines are available to cut metal and wood, an Assembly Bay for assembling work and testing, and a Gallery for displaying products as reference.
According to Dr. Lai, a personalized items such as a handphone holder that can be inserted into empty CD-room of a car, a re-engineered flying drone, or even reconstructing a face into a real solid figure via 3D scanner and printer can be done in the lab.
“The whole idea behind the initiative of creating FabLab is, we want the students having more fun on the campus rather than studying,” she said.
However, for students who want to use the equipment for specific purpose or brainstorming, she encouraged students make booking via iu.fablab@newinti.edu.my.
