It comprises of proteins and fat from milk, usually the milk of cows, buffalo, goats, or sheep. Here are some of the compelling facts that you may not know about cheese.

  1. There are more than 2000 varieties of cheese available around the world. More cheeses are being produced globally than tobacco, tea, cocoa, and coffee combined. Mozzarella is the world’s most commonly-consumed cheese.

  2. Pizza Hut is the largest cheese-using fast food giant. It uses more than 300 million pounds of cheese annually. Other than this, U.S produces over 10 billion pounds of cheese annually, but people of Greece are the largest consumers of cheese. An average person from Greece will consumes around 27.3kg of cheese every year.

  3. Historically, the first commercial cheese factory was established in Switzerland during 1815. But, the successful mass production commenced in 1851 in one of the factory in United States. The factory is located at Oneida Country, New York and was built by Jesse Williams.

  4. During the Roman Empire, large Roman house had separate kitchens in manufacturing cheese. They called it as careale. Romans had enough resources to make various types of cheese. When new techniques for smoking and flavoring were being found, they spread them throughout the empire.

  5. Some varieties of cheese like mozzarella, cheddar, Swiss and American, help to prevent tooth decay. It stimulates the flow of saliva which leads to elimination of sugar and acids from the mouth.
