Remember that ex that you had that was a beauty with an alluring smile, and an intriguing personality, with being able to charm anyone that catches their attention. But as you go deeper into the relationship, you find yourself stuck in an endless hope of desperation and anger in the attempt to win her only to fail as she screws you over and over again with each attempt. Yeah, that’s Dark Souls to you. The bane of all video games that everyone has a love hate relationship with it.
But there’s something that kept players from coming back to the game and lived to see 3 more sequels and expansion to the franchise. The harsh difficulty and the unforgiving world of Dark Souls with an endless danger around the corner, to hard hitting enemies that seems to appear out of nowhere and finally, fighting iconic and seems to attract more fans instead of driving them away and yet it still has a certain charm to it. The game made no attempt to explain the story of its world nor lore which in turn depends all on the player’s point of views and understanding of whatever information is given to them on item descriptions and character interactions.
The most memorable moment is the Souls series should go to the brutal and intense boss fights of unparalleled power in the game. Accompanied by a dramatic opera playing in the background in its chorus as you dodge jump a barrage of strikes incoming and heal at the same time while trying to land hits on the boss is plain absurd and yet so satisfying when you successfully kill him/her yourself. Every boss in the game has it’s own unique soundtrack thanks to the composers, Yuka Kitamura and Motoi Sakuraba that produced god like soundtracks for additional dramatic purposes.
Perhaps the pivotal point in the Souls franchise when it announced that the series will come to an end after Dark Souls 3. While many fans have a mixed feelings to their beloved franchise come to an end, this bittersweet ending might just be what FromSoftware needs with a little breather to come up with something new or revolutionary like Code: Vein that is soon to be announced.
All in all, Dark Souls has given us many memories of despair, anger and hopelessness, and that is the point. The game was never made to be easy to start with. Every death and rebirth you experience is just another stepping stone to achieve that rewarding feeling of killing a boss, and then fall back into despair as you finally understand the story and lore of that boss you killed. But that’s where the game shines. It gave people conniptions and mixed feelings like no other game does. When the day Dark Souls finally fades away will probably be nowhere near with other companies trying to imitate that Souls like difficulty. It has truly, become the modern day classic among an endless mass of game. So, gear up, Praise the Sun and start getting gud when you finally get your hands on this masterpiece.
